Veteran Tribute Bike gets good send off on
its Operation Dust Off ride across America Fundraiser.
Jacksonville , Florida 4th. April 2009

After heavy rain on Friday night 3rd. April it was all sunshine Saturday morning in Atlantic Beach , Florida.
With so many events to chose from mostly Veterans came to American Legion Post 316 on Atlantic Blvd to view the Tribute Bike and lend their support to Operation Dust Offs intial send off . With money being tight it still took Vets to support Vets, with Post 316 donation $100.00 as well as the woman who worked the food concession donating all her tips. A special thanks to Eddie and Michelle for all there help and support .

Operation Dust Off

Members of the Vietnam Vets MC and Legacy Vets MC made up the bulk of the motorcycle escort to Jacksonville's outskirts where they also hosted the Tribute Bike at their club house. ( Love you my brothers ).
The run was not without incident as the Tribute Bike's chain came off the sprocket just minutes from the club house.
The Tribute Bike was also billowing white smoke from both exhausts. ( NOT GOOD ).
With bad whether threating to rain out the venue in Tallahassee on Sunday 5th. April the Tribute Bike delayed its visit until Saturday 11th. April at the same location which also allowed time for repairs.
From this leg of the journey forward , come rain or shine, its California or bust.

Murphy's Law

If you believe  in Murphy’s Law then  Murphy's  after me with a Vengeance.
After my escort ride out of Jacksonville and my chain coming off the sprocket I found out that it  tour up my transmission. The white smoke pumping out of my exhausts meant major ring and valve problems.
Having to be in Tallahassee, Florida the following weekend did not leave me any time to rebuild  so I had to opt for a new motor and transmission  ( mucho denaro) put in a 113 Altima Engine and a primo 6 speed Transmission . Thanks to Minh and crew at Venome Choppers in New Port Richey I headed out for Tallahassee late Thursday night.
Arrived Tallahassee , Florida early Friday morning. Spent the day advertising Saturday and Sundays Fundraising event on the local T. V. and Radio Stations as well as  visiting a homeless Shelter.
The Fundraiser was staged at the Vietnam Hooch , American Legion Post 13 on Lake Ella Drive. Out of roughly 500 members only Curt Craig organized the whole event as an army of one and I thank him whole heartedly. A special thanks to Jim Brennan who helped me during the event itself.
As in Jacksonville it was basically Vets supporting Vets. Monday was to be the big motorcycle escort out of Tallahassee on way to my next stop, Houston , TX.  Murphy did not let that happen as we had to take shelters from the heavy rain and wind not to mention the threat of Hail and Tornado's. That did not stop R.C. from the Patriot Guard and a few others from showing up on their bikes to make the escort ride. Love ya my brothers and sisters.
Tuesday morning the worst of the weather had past so I saddled up and headed west. Next stop is U.S. Vets Midtown  Terrace, 4640 Main Street, Houston , TX.
When I was in Vietnam the 173rd. Airborne always got the toughest assignments. I never let Charlie get the better of me then and I am not about to let Murphy get the better of me now. See you in Houston TX  on Saturday 18th. April , 2009.

Houston Texas

Murphy's Law - Murphy  followed me to Houston , TX. It was wind , rain, and threats of tornado's all over again . I keep running head on into storm after storm. I did get out to visit homeless Vietnam Vets on the streets and at their camps . I accompanied Carolyn Bates - Jackson, a Out Reach Coordinator for U.S. Veterans Initiative who liaisons with the Vets. She carry’s them food, blankets, etc.Texas Veteran and works with those Vets to help get them off the streets . What she does, she does from the heart and the Vets know it.

I also got to visit  Houston’s Veteran  Hospital. It was there I met Ron Ridgeway, Veterans Counselor for the Texas Veterans Commission . Although retired he continues to help Veterans and has done so ever since being released from the Hanoi Hilton where he spent over 6 years as a prisoner of war ( P.O.W. ) he was listed as ( KIA)  killed in action and displayed the flag which was given to his mother which is customary for mothers who had lost their sons . His story amazed me for he is an amazing man.
A special thank you to Rito Valdez and Gary Robinson who organized my visit and the rest of Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 who came out in the rain to support my fundraising effort. A big thank you to U.S. Vets of Houston who hosted the Tribute Bike at the Midtown Terrace on 4640 Main Street which used to be a hotel but is now a life line for Veterans . From taking them off the streets to providing them with food and shelter  as well as  vocational skills training and every other possible need you can think of. Like the medical evacuation pilots and crew who flew in to evacuate the wounded from the battlefield, U.S. Vets evacuates them from the streets . They  were God sent and may God Bless them all. I did not know that organizations such as this existed. They have done so much yet there is so much yet to be done. They can only go as far as finances will carry them and as usual, its basically Vets helping Vets. It warmed my heart to see so few do so much.
With my fundraising day completely washed out we waited for the storm to pass then rolled out of Houston early morning of the 19th. for a scheduled fundraiser just out side of  San Antonio, TX that same day . The sun shined in my face as we rolled into American Legion Post 593 in Converse , TX. It did my heart well to share the Veterans Tribute Bike with my homeless and not now homeless Vet brothers in Houston.
Looking forward towards doing the same on the rest of my tour.
I hope we left Murphy behind us.

Converse, Texas

Rolled into Converse , TX with sunshine and blue sky’s overhead. A  beautiful day for a change. Set up the Tribute Bike and its display at American Legion Post 593 at 326 Legion Drive West. Spent the day with the Legion Riders and other American Legion members from the post sharing the Tribute Bike with them and exchanging War story’s. Terry Smith , who was the main organizer of the event collected money from their members and handed it over to me to help with fundraising efforts . ( Vets Helping Vets )
On Monday 20 April I road the Tribute Bike into San Antonio to visit with my Vet brothers at the Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Center at 4455 Horizon Hill and at the National Veterans Out Reach Program at 519 N. Medina . Both help homeless Vets get back on their feet in numerous ways . As always , it did my heart well to share the Tribute Bike with them. If my visits made only one  Veterans day then my ride into San Antonio was worth the effort. Terry Smith and Bill Papa made the trip with me and I was happy to ride with them. They were a big help .
If was then off to El Paso , TX  . Mile after mile after mile of nothing. The cross winds would catch me now and then but I reached El Paso in one piece. Looking forward to my stay in El Paso.

El Paso, Texas

El Paso was bigger than I expected . Road out to Barnnett’s Harley Davidson the morning of the  24th. to thank them for putting the Veterans Tribute Bike in their Magazine which highlighted Sturgis  Bike Week. I was told that photo's would also be in their special Issue to be released in few months . I look forward . Also had some minor repairs done to the Tribute Bike complements of Barnnett’s Harley Davidson. I thank them whole heartedly.

Rolled out of Barnnett’s around 11:00 a.m. to the other side of town to visit  " Fisher House " which provides 5 Star accommodations to parents who come visit their wounded warriors at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center Fisher House Manager Harry E. Hicks Jr. was kind enough to take me on a tour of this first class facility. Hats off to Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher ( Founders) and Ken and Tammy Fisher for doing what they do throughout the U.S. at 43 facility’s. God Bless.

It was then off to Fort Bliss to visit my active duty Army brothers at the Warrior Transition Battalion. They were expecting me for I had received special clearance in advance but still had to wait for the M.P.'S  to come  and give the Tribute  Bike a once over.

Ft. Bliss

I was given a Medal by the Commander and Command Sergeant Major and will try to find a special place for it on the Tribute Bike . The Troops loved the Tribute Bike and appreciated the visit. It was my pleasure.

Left  Fort Bliss in route to American Legion Post 36 who was my host and provided me a Venue to show the Tribute Bike to raise Funds . Spent the remaining part of the day setting up the Tribute Bike and its display in an enclosed area at the post for my next day fundraiser.
The morning of the 25th. came early. The turn out wasn't bad but it was mostly supported by the American Legion Members themselves. As usual - Vets helping Vets . Closed up shop late afternoon and head out in heavy winds out of the wsw to my next stop which is the morning of the 26th. ( tomorrow) in Tucson , Arizona. I will not let up for I am on a mission from the heart. I do want to end this article with a special thank you to  Chuck Martin Post 36 Commander. Without his help my El Paso, TX  visit would not have been possible . God Bless you my brother.

Tucson, Arizona

Before leaving El Paso, TX  in route to Tucson , Arizona I call ahead to re-confirm the prior arrangements made with Mark Myers ( Night Hawk ) of the Patriot Guard V.F.W. Post 10188. He was to meet me at exit 302 of Hwy 10 with a motorcycle  escort to escort the Tribute Bike to the V.F.W. Post at 345 E. Roger Road where I would set up to raise funds. I was shocked  to hear Mark tell me that he " dropped the ball"  I asked if anyone else  had picked it up and his reply was that he did  not know. I immediately e-mailed the  Post Commander  "Corkey" But to date have received no reply. After traveling all they way from El Paso through some gusty winds I decide to stop at the post anyway. No one at the Post knew anything about my arrival.

Ft. Bliss

I have been hosted by American Legion Posts from Jacksonville, Florida clear across the country except for Houston , where I was hosted by U.S. Vets and Rolling Thunder. I am not a member of the American Legion. I am a member of the V.F.W. I am glad I did not have to depend on V.F.W. Post 10188 to cover my back in Vietnam. I do plan to join the American Legion in the near future for they came through for me when asked to assist with the " Ride Across America" fund raising efforts. It is now too late to try and find another venue in Tucson . ( Too bad - So sad) . Will try to share the Tribute Bike with my brothers at" Davis Monthan Air Force Base" as I did with my army brothers at Fort Bliss in El Paso before hitting the road again in route to Phoenix.
I stopped by the Airplane grave yard and picked up a few items for my next secret project. Got them at a very reduced price thanks to Don Howell,  proprietor.

Las Vegas, Nevada

It was three Fundraisers in three days.
Rolled over Hoover Dam and into Vegas early Friday 1st. May. I was met by Jerry Autrey Post Commander of American Legion Post 8 at 733 Veterans Memorial Drive who was my host . He took me on a tour of Vegas and showed me where I would be displaying the Tribute Bike in an effort to raise funds on Saturday and Sunday.
I then stopped by U.S. Vets. Like U.S. Vets of Houston Texas,  they offer similar benefits to homeless Vets but unlike Houston they seemed to busy to give me the time of day. I stuck one of my flyers on their door which stated "if you are ever in need of financial assistance , contact me ” and left the premise.
It  was then back to Post 8 where I set up the Tribute Bike inside the Post in the middle of the dance floor for the benefit of its members. A great bunch of Veterans.

Saturday 2nd. April it as off to the Leatherneck Club at 4360 W. Spring Mountain Road. They were excellent hosts for the day. A low turn out as far as fundraising but  what else is new. Those that did come paid Tribute to the motorcycle that pays Tribute to them.
Sunday 3rd. April started early with a run down  Las Vegas Blvd .  at around 3:00 am. Watched the sun rise over the city that never sleeps. Then it was off to  Las Vegas Harley Davidson  located at 2605 South Eastern Avenue. Debbie was there to greet me. Her dealership hosted and promoted the fundraising event and even offered a free Bar-B-Q  that afternoon. They set the Tribute Bike up just inside the main entrance doors. I would joke with the customers walking in pointing to the Tribute Bike and telling them it as Harley's newest model called the Boarder Patrol Model or the Inner City Cruiser.
As with all my other fundraising stops across country the fundraising effort was not doing as well as  hoped for but I am not discouraged. When the going gets tough the tough get going. I have never failed to reach my objective and complete my mission and I do not intend to start now.
It’s California or bust ( go west young man ) . I remain optimistic. Maybe a movie producer will use the Tribute Bike in his next movie ( Maybe ).
The American Legion riders of Post 8 gave the Tribute Bike an honorable and fitting escort out of Vegas  and I truly thank them as well as Jerry Autrey , Post  Commander, and all the members of American Legion Post 8 in Las Vegas. I love you all my brothers & sisters. ( ride safe ) .

California Dreamin'

If it were not for “ Cage “ of the Legacy Vets MC.
I would have had no fundraisers  in San Diego. Thank you my brother.
On Saturday 9th. May, thanks to its owner . We displayed the Tribute Bike to raise funds  at Sweet Water Harley Davidson in National City.
On Sunday 10th. May the Tribute Bike was displayed for fundraising at V.F.W. Post 5477 in Imperial Beach . Their hospitality was of the highest standard and I
Thank them sincerely.
After displaying the Tribute Bike on the 15th. for my brothers at U.S. Vets in Long Beach it was off to Hollywood to ride in the Wounded Warriors Project Motorcycle Fundraiser from Hollywood Blvd  in front of the Kodak Theater to Abuelitas Restaurant in Topanga Canyon on Armed Forces Day ( 16 May). The Tribute Bike had the honor of riding point and lead the motorcycle procession riding behind Army Hummer’s and alongside a Vintage 1940’s Harley Army motorcycle  which carried the American flag.
The Tribute Bikes Journey to Hollywood, California started with a desire to display the Tribute Bike at Leather and Lace at the Playboy Mansion in order to raise funds to help our homeless Veterans. A call was made to Bill Gordon at Motorcycle Charity Associates Inc. who in turn had us contact Jose Dominguez at the Wounded Warrior Project who was planning a fundraiser at the Playboy Mansion for Armed Forces Day  ( 16 May 2009 ) .
Jose Dominguez  indicated his desire to join forces with the Veteran Tribute Bike and have it displayed at  the Playboy Mansion. We informed Jose Dominguez that our 501  (c)( 3) Non-Profit status was pending . That we would put together a cross country fundraiser on our ride across America. That if our non-profit status had not come through by 16th. May we would donate all the funds raised to the Wounded Warriors Project. We then began to make arrangements for fund raisers with V.F.W.'s,  American Legions, U.S. Vets, Rolling Thunder, Patriot Guard, etc. along Route 10 from Jacksonville, Florida to Las Vegas, Nevada when Jose Dominguez informed us that the Tribute Bike would not be part of their Playboy Mansion Event.
Many different and conflicting reasons were given as to Wounded Warriors Project abrupt 360% . " We cannot afford to pay for your insurance" to " the Playboy Mansion would be filled with old army vehicles". They are now saying it was due to a doubt of our  501 - (c)- ( 3) status ( pending approval). We received our 501 (c) (3) in  March 2009 effective as of September 19, 2008. A copy was sent to Jose Dominguez - " Wounded Warrior Project" but received no reply to date. Motorcycle Charity Associates Inc., although totally involved with Wounded Warrior Projects Stars and Strips Event stated they know nothing about Wounded Warriors Project dropping the Veteran Tribute Bike like a hot grenade.
After making commitments with organizations from Jacksonville, Florida to Las Vegas, Nevada we honored those commitments and showed up on the dates arranged for the fundraising event because our word is our bond. We are in front of the Kodak Theater on Hollywood, Blvd on Armed Forces Day because I said I would be. I am a man of my word.

Thanks to Dana Spencley , Manager  of events for the Wounded Warrior Project  and another young lady  who represented the Playboy Club who  had the wisdom to recognize the draw of the Tribute Bike as well as its theme pulled a few strings and “ Presto”, ( California Dream’en) the Veteran Tribute Bike was asked to be displayed that evening at the Playboy Mansion for Wounded Warrior Projects Charity Event. After some consideration, I accepted. I hope the presence of the Veteran Tribute Bike help their fundraising efforts.  OH WHAT A NIGHT. Thank you lady’s. I love you !    Left the Playboy Mansion around 3:30 a.m. and headed for Washington D.C. for Memorial Day and Rolling Thunder. See you there.

Washington D.C.

Memorial Day Weekend 22-23-24 May 2009

The run from Hollywood , California to Washington , D.C. was an exhausting one.
My first stop was to Arlington National Cemetery to pay Tribute to the over 300,000 men and woman who are buried there. I was given the privilege by the honor guard at The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier to do a special ceremony with honor guard and the playing of taps.

Arlington National Cemetery Memorial  Day 2009. Over hill over Dail, as we hit the dust trail. From the halls of Montezuma , to the shores of Tripoli. So anchors away my boys, anchors away. For off we go into the wild blue yonder , flying high, into the sky. That's were soldiers go when they die. Operation Dust Off Ride Across America Fundraiser ends on Memorial Day. The Veteran Tribute Bike is a Tribute to all Veterans,  from all branches of the military , and all wars. The Tribute Bike traveled from sea to shining sea. In a fitting Tribute to all who gave all I sprinkled sand from the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, at The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier. God Bless them, God Bless all who are buried here at Arlington Cemetery.

Arlington
Memories fade as time goes by,
over 300,000 grave stones mark those who died.
Standing tall for all to see ,
to tell all  who visit , Freedom isn't Free.
Robert Harris - " Sky Soldier"
Vietnam 1965-66

While at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day I noticed many school kids on school trips visiting the National Cemetery. I decided to do a quick pole whether any school kids, teachers, or adults knew anything about the constitution of the United States. So I would ask , ( who knows what the 5th. Amendment is ? ) No one knew. No one knew anything about the Constitution of the United States. How can  they know if they are losing their rights if they don't know they have them ? You don't know what you have until you lose it and then its too late. What did they think all those soldiers who are buried in Arlington died for if not for the Constitution of the United States and what it stands for. Freedom !

As  a Vietnam Veteran, I see no better place to end the ride across America Fundraiser to help our homeless Veterans than the Vietnam Memorial Wall  in Washington D.C.  on Memorial Day. We traveled from Jacksonville, Florida  to Hollywood , California to Washington, D.C. From sea to shining sea. To end this fundraiser, I sprinkled sea water from the Atlantic Ocean, and sea water from the Pacific Ocean, in a symbolic gesture, " from sea to shining sea" to represent the tears shed for our brothers, fathers, sons. Rest in peace my brothers. I love you all. God Bless you for making the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless America.

The run to the Wall with Rolling Thunder started early for me. I was up at 4:00 and arrived at the staging area  ( The Pentagon Parking Lot ) in Virginia at 5:30. I was early . The huge parking lot would eventually be filled to over flowing with over a half million motorcycles. Rolling thunder is a protest , not a parade. Rolling Thunder is asking for accountability for our  KIA ( Killed In Action) and our P.O.W.'s ( Prisoners Of War )  . We want them home.

I thank Artie  Muller of Rolling Thunder for what he and his organization are doing and for the huge part he let I and the Veteran Tribute  Bike play in Rolling Thunders run to the Wall over the past 3 years. I love you my brother. God Bless.

Gold Star Mothers are those mothers who lost their sons or daughters in war. My heart goes out  to them for their tremendous sacrifice. Gold Star Children are those children who lost a mother or father in war. It was an honor and a privilege to let them sit on the Veteran Tribute Bike. Their  sacrifice was  also a great one. God bless them all.

Rolling Thunder is the only time of the year when I truly feel as though I am with my family , for it truly is one big family re-union (over one million strong). We are a big huge band of brothers.
We have been there and done that. We can not relate that experience with anyone who hasn't . So once again a say " Welcome home my brothers." God willing, we will meet again at next years family re-union.  Until then, be safe, ride safe, and be good. If you can't be good, Be careful. God Bless you. God Bless America.

After two months on the road Operation Dust Off Ride Across America Fundraiser 2009 is over. Financially it fell far short of expectations. Basically Vets supporting and helping Vets. Most Non-Vet  American citizens seem to take their freedoms for granted. It is my hope that the documentary film being produced about Operation Dust Off will stimulate some interest and funding in the future.
The funds raised on Operation Dust Off , after expenses, will go to U.S. Vets who are doing a great job helping our homeless brothers. ( so few, doing so much, for so many , with so little ). I lived in a small R.V. ( no hotel expenses ). Ate at American Legions & V.F.W.'s .( no food expenses). I am a volunteer. ( no salary for me ). Major expense was gasoline .

Will Operation Dust Off be an annual event ? I'll let you know.
1/4 of our country's homeless today are Veterans. You can help. Visit our website at www:veterantributebike.org
We are a 501 (c) ( 3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping our homeless Veterans. We never left our wounded behind on the battlefield. I see no reason why we should leave them on the street.

Remember that all gave some - some gave all
Time was served - Time to honor
The Nation which forgets its defenders will itself be forget. So if you love and enjoy your freedom, don't just thank a Vet, donate to the organizations which you feel will help a Veteran in need. They need your help not only on Veterans Day or Memorial Day. They need your help everyday.

God Bless you
God Bless America.
